art museum sunday

We finally made some time yesterday to go check out the Hi Fructose exhibit at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento and I'm so glad we did! We ended up wandering around almost the entire museum for hours before we even made our way to the actual exhibit we had come to see. There was just so much to look at! It was wonderful...

There was this amazing exhibit called Maddest Hatter by Mark Dean Veca which Scarlett has decided is now her new room. It was so bright and exciting and awesome.

There was also an exhibit called Plink that Scarlett thought was the coolest. It was all sound and color and light and she would've spent all afternoon there if we let her.

I can absolutely see many more visits in our future. We had such a great time.

love & cupcakes,

It's Candy's 12th birthday! She's celebrating in classic lazy cat style - napping, lounging, playing with her catnip toys, more naps... She lives the life. Here's what I'm up to right now.

Watching - I'm catching up on Once Upon a Time on Hulu and I'm on the second to last episode. The singing episode was so very cheesy, right? I was cringing the entire time.

Reading - I'm almost finished with the first Harry Potter book again and I picked up a stack of library books so stay tuned for reading updates to come!

Eating - School started this week so I'm slowly getting back into cooking dinner at home again. I made some baked rigatoni last night and it's much bigger than I anticipated so it looks like we'll be having leftovers for a while.

Anticipating - I'm meeting up with some friends from high school that live nearby and we're having a pool day and BBQ tomorrow afternoon. It'll be so nice to see them again - it's been far too long. And I'm sure Scarlett is going to love having new kids to swim and play with.

Wishing - I bought a pumpkin pecan waffle scented candle at the mall this morning and the smell is giving me serious fall feels. Come on autumn! I need some cooler sweater weather and some falling leaves, please!

Working On - Scarlett begins ballet classes at the end of the month and she also wants to take a couple of after school activities, too, so I'm working on figuring out our new routine and schedule and trying to make sure everything is paid for and all her supplies are ready to go. She wants to do ALL THE THINGS!

Loving - I'm loving that Nick is around to help with morning drop off for school. It's nice to not have to do it by myself all the time. And having my quiet time at home during school hours is awesome! I've been catching up on my podcasts and being able to knock out my chores without them immediately needing to be redone.

I hope you have some fun stuff planned for this weekend! What are you up to??

love & cupcakes,

we have a first grader!

Scarlett started her first day of first grade this morning! I can't believe that she's already in the first grade - I feel like she was just a toddler yesterday!

She hopped up out of bed this morning all excited and ready to jump into her first day. She got dressed and all ready for school without any drama [unheard of lately!] and even let me brush her hair! It was wonderful. I hope it wasn't just a first day of school fluke and we can continue on this path once she gets used to the new routine.

Nick came with us to drop her off and I only teared up for a quick moment as he and I left the school. Progress! Wish me luck when it's time to go back and pick her up - it's a whole new area to me so I have to figure out the traffic patterns and all the dos and don'ts of driving in our new school area.

Happy first day of school!

love & cupcakes,

Happy Friday! How has your week been?? We're almost 100% settled in our new apartment - only a few small boxes are left to be unpacked and they're things like cables and wires for the TV so Nick is in charge of figuring that stuff out. There's a light at the end of the tunnel! Here's what I'm up to right now...

Watching - I'm totally into Riverdale on Netflix right now. Also, we recently got TV service again after years without and I'm completely hooked on HGTV. Fixer Upper is my life right now.

Reading - I'm still working on the Harry Potter series again but I also just got a library card for our new local branch today. I'm so excited to check out books again!

Eating - Scarlett keeps managing to talk me into getting frozen yogurt at the shop down the street. It's so good... I've rediscovered my love for chocolate froyo with gummy bears. So yum!

Anticipating - We have some friends coming out to visit tomorrow and we're going to head to Old Town Sacramento to visit the shops. Apparently there's a pretty epic candy shop that we have to find. Stay tuned!

Wishing - The weather around here has started to get a bit more breezy and not as scorching hot so I'm hopeful that fall is on its way.

Working On - We're pretty settled in the new apartment so far, but I'm hoping we can spend some serious time this weekend riding our bikes around and exploring a bit. I still need to figure out my way around town a bit more so I don't have to rely on my GPS so much when I'm driving. I'm sure a long family bike ride is a good way to get my bearings around here.

Loving - I'm loving our new place so far. I think we absolutely made the right choice in moving here.

What are your plans for this weekend? Anything amazing going on??

love & cupcakes,

keep calm and move on...

Moving sucks. It stresses me out to no end. Even though we used a moving service this time, it was still crazy and felt really rushed and hectic and I still ended up packing a ton of stuff and carrying a bunch of stuff up and down stairs and basically completely wrecking my body to the point I could barely move. So yeah, moving sucks.

But this time, I had a secret weapon. I found meditation sessions on Aaptiv and it was amazing.

My mind cleared and I found a little time each day for myself and hit reset on the stresses of moving. It was so refreshing and such a good way to help me stay calm during the craziness of yet another move. And the absolute best part was there is a mediation session for kids, too! Scarlett (like Nick and I) tends to be a bit of a night owl and after the sun goes down, she can get pretty amped up and not at all in the mood for bedtime. So the other night, she got herself all ready for bed and we settled in for a nice calming session together. We focused on our breathing and calmed ourselves down and it was wonderful.

I highly recommend checking this app out. I'm excited to check out the walking and running workouts as well as continuing the meditation. There is a one week free trial you can use to see how many of their awesome sessions work for you. Let me know which one you like the best!

love & cupcakes,

Back to the grind! I'm hoping to jump back into the old blog now that we've settled in our new apartment a bit. There are still a few pesky boxes hanging around, but we're pretty much unpacked and almost back to normal. Here's what I'm up to...

Watching - I'm so happy Netflix added The Worst Witch as a new series. It doesn't hold a candle to the ridiculousness of the old movie from the 80s, but it's still pretty rad.

Reading - In honor of his birthday a few days ago, I started re-reading the Harry Potter series again. Always so good...

Eating - I'm just starting to get back in the kitchen again after the chaos of the move took away all my energy [and made most of my dishes impossible to find]. I live for rice bowl nights - such an easy and yummy dinner!

Anticipating - I'm all about the weekends lately. It's so nice to have Nick around and to explore our new neighborhood with him and Scarlett. I'm hoping for an early morning bike ride sometime this weekend!

Wishing - Right now I'm wishing these last few boxes would unpack themselves and find places for all the randomness still left lying around. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but these last few things are making me crazy.

Working On - We still have the pictures from the master bedroom and Scarlett's room to hang and a few pieces of furniture that need to find a new home. Once those things are done, it should feel so much more settled in here. We also still need a few chairs and barstools, as well as a small table for the coffee area so we don't just always default to sitting on the couch with our morning mochas and breakfast.

Loving - I'm loving our new apartment right now. It's a bit bigger than our last place and it just feels so much nicer. A fresh start is always inspiring.

Stay tuned for more new apartment updates, neighborhood shenanigans and a post about how I managed to keep my head on straight during the insanity of yet another move. What have you been up to lately?

love & cupcakes,
