idle hands...

What in the world did we do while watching TV back in the days when the internet was slow or even, God forbid, non-existent??? I can't, for the life of me, imagine just sitting quietly while I'm watching TV. I can't help myself - if I'm at home watching something, I'm also either on my computer, writing blog posts or scrolling absentmindedly through Facebook, or playing some mindless game on my phone, usually Candy Crush or some reasonable facsimile.

I think I need to update my embroidery basket and keep some projects next to the couch so I can just grab something to keep my hands busy when we settle in for a Netflix marathon or our Sunday evening Walking Dead dates. Or maybe I just need to practice sitting still and giving my full attention to whatever we're watching.

What about you? Can you sit and focus on the TV when it's on? Or do you need something to keep your hands busy, too?

love & cupcakes,

It's been a while since I've done one of these posts...  Here's what I'm up to.

Reading - I'm slacking on reading books majorly lately... But I try to make sure I read a few of the blogs on my Bloglovin' list each day. A few months ago I actually made it through the entire list on Bloglovin' but now there are over a thousand posts for me to get through - I may never get it down to zero again.

Watching - I've fallen into a Scandal spiral and can't stop watching! My sister is super happy that I'm finally addicted just like she is.

Anticipating - We are headed to Santa Cruz to celebrate my birthday this weekend. I'm super excited! I can't wait to eat some yummy seafood and put my toes in the sand...

Listening To - I always seem to come back to the Fleetwood Mac station on Pandora - every single time.

Eating - There was Valentine candy on clearance at Target and I foolishly bought  bag of truffle Kisses. Dangerous...

Working On - Scarlett's room has become almost unbearably messy. I've been trying to purge a bit here and there to help make some room and alleviate some of the clutter. It's a long process...

Wishing - For some real winter weather around here. I know that the rest of the country seems to be frozen solid and I shouldn't complain, but I really miss the cold weather. We only had a few days of cold around here and spring is fast approaching... I need some clouds and rain, please!

I hope your weekend has some fun planned! What are you up to?

bloom where you're planted

When I was a little kid, whenever I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered without hesitation, "A pediatrician." And I planned on attending Stanford [on a scholarship, no less] and that was that.

As I got to high school, I changed the college to UC Santa Cruz and wasn't so sure that I wanted to be a doctor anymore but I still had lofty plans.

As time went on and circumstances changed, I ended up going to community college for a few years, followed by jobs in retail and restaurants until I ended up at Kaiser and spent almost eight years there - until the day I became a stay at home mom.

It's not like the thought of being a stay at home mom had never crossed my mind. My mom stayed home with us for most of my childhood and it was awesome. We always had someone at home with us and I remember many days spent in the backyard, or walking around town with my mom, brother and sister. It was a charmed life. But I never really saw it as part of my future. I always imagined I would be sitting at a desk in my adult life, not sitting on a couch while I wait for the laundry to finish drying or for Scarlett to finish cleaning her room. It never really crossed my mind that I would be good at staying at home.

I'm very impatient. I get easily distracted. I need quiet time to myself. I can have control freak tendencies. All of those things are a no-go for a stay at home mom. Kids don't care if you like things done "a certain way" - when they try to do things, it's going to be on their own terms and in their own time. There will be messes - and then there will be new messes on top of the ones you haven't even had a chance to clean up yet. They will not care if you really need just a few minutes of peace and quiet to yourself. Or if you'd just about kill for a nice hot cup of coffee and a good book. They want what they want - and they need what they need. In the course of me writing this post, I've had to go deal with at least three mini-catasrophes with Scarlett [so far], some including permanent marker and a letter opener. There have already been tears and a phone call to Nick to help me deal with this. That's how things work around here. And I'm not sure I'm very good at dealing with that kind of stuff.

But this is where I am.

We went to a new church last weekend to check it out and see if we'd be interested in going back. Park of the sermon was about "finding your group" - the people in your life that it's your job to help shape and guide. I didn't realize it at the time, but Scarlett is my group. And I've been planted in her life [and she in mine] to help guide her and shape her into a wonderful person who is kind and loving and hopefully has more patience than I do.

I need to bloom where I'm planted. And I need to be gentle with myself and remember that flowers aren't always pretty and healthy and ready for a bouquet. Sometimes they're wilting. Sometimes they need more light and more water. Sometimes they need to be moved and handled carefully. And sometimes they need to be re-planted and given a fresh start.

Today is my birthday. Today is my fresh start. Today is my chance to bloom where I'm planted and be the best flower I can be.

fifty shades of girls night out...

Last week I finally got a night out with the girls - and it was MUCH needed.

We grabbed some dinner and followed it up with a showing of Fifty Shades of Grey. Now, I admit I've read the books and seen the movie but I'm not going to delve into some "review" of the film for you. I enjoyed myself and that's really all that I care about for a girls night. Also, I may have had a bit of wine during the movie, so that always improves things.

Speaking of wine, my friend Jamie got me a bottle for my birthday - and it was hilarious!

Fifty Shade of Grey wine!! Perfect for our girls night! Even the cork was funny...

I'm already ready for another girls night!

out and about

Last weekend we went downtown so Nick could get his hair cut and Scarlett and I wandered around for a bit while we waited for him.

We finally got a chance to try out the soft serve from the Meadowlark Drive Thru Dairy that we've passed a million times. It was super good! We can't wait to go back!

love & cupcakes,

Scarlett and I watched this video [multiple times!] the other day and she loves it. She now talks about the "Pleasantons" [Presidents] and thinks one of them went swimming naked in a pond and a crocodile bit his face off, but they were friends. I think I need to re-start the Scarlett Show around here because she has the most interesting things to say lately!

girls night out

Scarlett is always up for a party but I've been feeling like a hermit lately.  It's been a rough week and feels like it should already be the weekend - but tonight I'm finally getting out of the house and having a dinner and movie date with the girls. I let Scarlett pick out my outfit [it's an interesting one!] and I'm going to put on makeup and have a great time.

What are your weekend plans?

pirate metal!!

Nick and I got the chance to go to a pirate metal show last night and it was awesome!! We got to see one of our favorite bands - Alestorm - who just seem to get better and better each time we see them. Plus, we got to check out a few new [to us anyway] bands that were totally great, too. We saw The Dread Crew of Oddwood - awesomeness! And a guy called Rainbowdragoneyes who does piratey 8-bit inspired music. I totally think Scarlett would love both bands - almost as much as she loves Alestorm already!

I love you!

Disneyland - The Last Day

We've come to the end of our Disneyland trip... Finally, right?!?! ;)

On our last day, we spent the morning at the park before we had to pack up and get in the car for the long ride home. Scarlett wanted her face painted again, to take another ride on Space Mountain [which resulted in her bonking her ear and ruining the aforementioned face painting] and we wanted to make sure we got some souvenirs for Scarlett's cousins and my sister for keeping an eye on our apartment while we were gone.

On our way out of the park, we took the Monorail and got to sit in the very last car with all the windows. We met a very nice woman and her son who were totally into pin collecting - they go to Disneyland every Thursday for the new pin releases! The woman saw that we all had lanyards with only a few pins on them [we left most of our other pins at home this time] and she gave Scarlett a handful of trader pins so the next time we're there, she can trade with the cast members at Disneyland! So sweet!

We grabbed some lunch at the Rainforest Cafe on our way back to the room and then packed up and jumped in the car - but not before running into Goofy in our hotel lobby and getting some photos with him!

Scarlett bonked her ear just before this photo was taken - you can see her hand going to cover her ear and the poor look of pain and confusion on her little face... But she's a tough one and as soon as she finished crying, she said "Can we go on Space Mountain again?"

This trip is going to be tough to beat. It was the perfect amount of fun, excitement and relaxation. One for the books, for sure.

Once we got home, we did a load of laundry and repacked our bags for a trip to Lake Tahoe the next day. But I'll save that story for another post... ;)

happy hearts day!

It's here! My favorite day of the year!

And I'll be spending it with my favorite forever Valentine, hopefully surrounded by coffee, chocolate, wine and relaxing...

Happy Hearts Day!

Disneyland - Part Three

On day three at Disneyland, we were on our own. Nick's dad had a convention to go to so it was just the three of us doing Disney that day. Scarlett met Cinderella and got to take a walk with her, met a ton of princesses and characters, went on Space Mountain for the very first time [!!!] and was made an honorary citizen of Disneyland. Plus, she totally worked that little Ariel dress...

Nick and I had dinner reservations at Carthay Circle and it was phenomenal! Our food was amazing and the service was out of this world. I would love to go back someday. On our way out, we couldn't help but pose for some ridiculous photos...

When we got back to the hotel, we found a super happy Scarlett, happy as a clam with her post-swimming wet hair and a plate full of room service. Lucky girl!

We're almost to the end of our time in Disneyland - thanks for holding on through all of these pictures! Only one more day to go!
