sunday salad...

A salad always tastes better when someone else makes it for you, right? Nick chopped up all the veggies and grated the cheese for this all by himself and I got to just sit and relax while I watched. My favorite kind of meal!

love & cupcakes,

Scarlett has been wearing her pirate hat like crazy lately! It's the cutest thing!

Happy Friday!! Here's what I'm up to right now...

Reading - The Island: Part 1 by Michael Stark. I feel like things are [hopefully!] about to get pretty interesting so I'll keep you posted...

Watching - I've been all over the place lately - Glee, The Carrie Diaries, kids movies like crazy...

Anticipating - A busy week next week! I have errands to run, a dentist appointment, book club and a possible girls night all in the same week!

Listening To - Complete randomness on Spotify... I've had "Me and Julio" in my head for days now...

Eating - I'm back on a while cheddar popcorn kick...

Working On - Still clearing all of our excess stuff out of the house. We have soooo many things!

Wishing - That we were done with all this purging so we can just relax on our weekends again! Prepping for a move is the worst, right??

What have you been up to lately?

Walks with Scarlett...

Scarlett and I went for a walk/ride around the block the other day and it was so nice to just slow down and wander for a while...

We learned that it takes forever to walk around the block with a three year old and also that Scarlett totally needs a bigger bike - her little legs were way too long for her princess tricycle!

to pass the time...

I  finally read this book just recently and really enjoyed it. I'm pretty excited to see the movie!

Have you ever read this book?

sunday salad...

Nick made this week's salad while I was putting Scarlett down for her nap so I'm not entirely sure what all was in it... But it looks like romaine, spinach, carrots, mozzarella cheese, garlic butter croutons and I used a bit of ranch dressing on mine. It was pretty yummy!

rockstar moms...

This week's Rockstar Mom is Cassandra!

Name: Cassandra Manning Occupation: stay at home mom (formerly a district manager for a retail organization).
Kids: Connor, 8.5 months old. Home is Savage, MN
What a normal day looks like for me: Wake at 7, get a cup of coffee and pumping parts, pump for a hour, Connor wakes up, then it's Connors breakfast and morning nap, while I get a few loads of laundry done and clean the house. He wakes up around 11, then it's playtime with him, then lunch. After lunch we normally leave the house and go for a walk, to a play class, or to run errands. Once we get home, it's nap time for him, pump time for me. Then dinner, bath, pump, and bed. So our day is basically play, pump, eat, clean, and sleep. Lots of cleaning. Lots of playing
My favorite things to do with my son are: Walking with him in the stroller, going to the zoo and aquarium, and reading stories together in the rocking chair.
The advice I wished I'd followed, that no one told me, is this: When you become a mother, you need to let go of judgement. Realize that what works best for one family, may not work best for you.. And that's completely okay! People will judge you every single day. They will openly tell you their opinions on how you're raising your child. As long as your child is healthy, safe, and well taken care of, it doesn't really matter which road you take to get there. I broke a lot of "rules", and had to learn to let that fear of failure go. I really struggled with feelings of inadequacy and feeling like a failure because my baby cried, my house was dirty, and I didn't immediately lose all the baby weight, despite me trying tremendously hard in all categories. I had to learn the hard way that this role is HARD, and to not set these unachievable goals as a measure of my self worth. My son is perfect. He's happy, healthy, smart, and safe... And that's all that matters!
If I had a child free day, I'd probably get a pedicure and massage.. No, I'd probably try to live at the spa the whole day and get every treatment they offer! Wrap, peel, scrub, buff, and massage every piece of me! I've attached two photos, they both kind of describe what it's like to be a mom for me. Some moments are unbelievably precious, and others are just funny!

Thank you so much for sharing Cassandra!

A friend of mine recently told me that I have a "threenager" - a three year old that acts like a teenager already. She's got her exasperated sighs down pat and her response to me getting the slightest bit annoyed is "Okay, okay. Calm down."

I'm not ready for this yet...

The girl loves her ruffles...

Happy Friday!! We made it through another week... Here's what I'm currently up to -

Reading - I'm still slogging through Twisted Sisters by Jen Lancaster. Seriously - it IS a good book. I'm just super unmotivated lately. Luckily my book club meeting got pushed back two weeks so I have a chance to finish now!

Watching - I started watching The Carrie Diaries on Netflix. I caught the pilot when it was actually on TV but I missed the following episodes so I gave up. But I'm liking it. I'm about three episodes in so far...

Anticipating - A weekend with no plans... We're getting ready for a pretty epic yard sale in a few weeks so I imagine we'll spend most of our time this weekend prepping and deciding what is up for sale and what will be staying. But it will be nice to not have to rush out and be anywhere for a few days...

Listening To - I've been all over the place on Spotify - Polyphonic Spree, Billy Joel, Neil Young, Katy Perry [Scarlett ALWAYS wants Katy Perry]. There is seriously no rhyme or reason to my current playlists...

Eating - Pizza! We took a pizza making class last week [I'll post about it soon!] and our "homework" was to make our own pizza from scratch this week. I made some on Tuesday night and it was pretty good. I'm still working out the kinks but I'm glad to know that I can make the dough from scratch!

Working On - Getting our house cleared out of unnecessary stuff. A lot of our furniture isn't even ours [we're holding it for family members, we inherited it, etc] so once that gets cleared out, we'll have a better understanding of what we need to get rid of/get more of.

Wishing - That we could be already be done with the prepping for a possible summertime move and be settled in a new place. I'm excited to get familiar with a new area and find a new routine for our family...

Do you have any fun plans for this weekend?

love & cupcakes,

the art of taking a compliment...

"You look great!"
Oh gosh...
"Your house is awesome!"
It's such a disaster today!!
"I love your hair!"
Good Lord, it's so dirty!
"Your daughter is adorable."
She's a little monster, that one!

I'm terrible at taking compliments.

It's gotten increasingly worse since Scarlett came along. She's super cute and people love to tell us that. But I feel like if I accept the compliment, it's boastful. I've started asking Scarlett to say thank you to the complimenter in part to teach her to graciously accept a compliment, but mostly because I'm so terrible at accepting compliments myself, even on her behalf.

Nick reminds me all the time that by deflecting or dismissing the compliment, it sends the message to the complimenter that their words aren't important and that I'm not really listening to them. But I have such a difficult time just saying "thank you" and leaving it at that.

Thinking about it now, I don't think I give enough compliments, either. If I do compliment something, it's generally an item of someone's and not them themselves.  Compliments are this weird gray area for me where I'm uncomfortable getting them and apparently, uncomfortable giving them, too.

I'm going to challenge myself to be better at graciously accepting compliments and also strive to give more sincere compliments to others - especially to strangers. I think people need to hear nice things from others more often - especially if they don't know them.

Are you good at taking and giving compliments?

love & cupcakes,

city girls...

Recently, we went with Nick to work and spent the day wandering around San Francisco with my best friend Megan. We had such a great time - we're definitely going to do it more often! Scarlett played at an amazing park and got cupcakes and macarons from Miette. She was convinced the Ferry Building was a castle and made us go inside twice... We had lunch at Pier 39 and visited the sea lions. She got to take her first train ride and she absolutely loved it!

We should make this a weekly thing, right?

photo wall revamp

Last week I realized that the photos along my staircase wall were horribly dated - my nieces were all shown as babies and toddlers and Scarlett was hardly featured at all! It needed an update badly...

I took everything down and decided which frames would be on this wall - I wasn't a huge fan of the hanging square frames or the wood finish frames so those didn't make the cut. I still used a few that I'd rather switch out but I can do that later. I added in some prints of quotes that I love and some of Scarlett's artwork as well.

I tried to squeeze everything in a bit tighter to make it look more cohesive. I know that things aren't evenly spaced or level, but I think that kind of adds to the charm of it all. Life isn't perfect - it's messy. And I like the idea that my photos of it are as well.

Now Scarlett and I stop along the stairs and really look at the different pictures, where we used to just fly by and barely notice them at all. Scarlett likes to show me everyone in all the shots and say "hi" to her cousins. She's getting really good at remembering everyone's faces and names!

We just need to get some updated shots of all the grandparents and I think we'll be good!
